Museum Talk | "The Board Does the Work:" Domestic Industrialization and Laundry Technology

The Osgoode Township Museum is excited to host OTM's own Collections Officer Sarah Verreault for our November Museum Talk.

“The Board Does the Work”: Domestic Industrialisation and Laundry Technology will explore changes in the methods and tools used for the family wash during the 19th and 20th centuries. Learn what made Mondays so blue, the days of work to achieve properly clean clothes. The new century brought dramatic changes from electrification to new standards of cleanliness, from the copper boiler to the automatic washing machine. Did the labour-saving devices sold to women, from the 1850s to the 1950s, actually deliver on their promise? Does the board, or mother, do the work?

Sarah has 14 years of experience in museums, primarily working in Collections and Living History. She has a B.A. in Histoire from Laurentian University and a M.A. in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester. Outside of her professional interest in collections care and documentation, she has a personal interest in fashion history, learning historic skills and the interpretation of working-class heritage.
